Looking for a Steam Boiler Specialist in Massachusetts?

Steam boiler systems require a different level of knowledge than most heating contractors carry. These are older, specialized systems — and when something goes wrong, you need someone who actually understands how they work, not someone figuring it out as they go.

Ciardi Plumbing & Heating has extensive experience servicing and repairing steam boiler systems throughout the Merrimack Valley and North Shore. The older housing stock across Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill, and surrounding communities is full of these systems, and we work on them regularly. When you call Ciardi, you get Michael Ciardi and his experienced crew — not a dispatcher, not whoever’s available. The same team that’s earned a 5.0-star rating from Massachusetts homeowners.

About Ciardi Plumbing

Ciardi Plumbing & Heating is a licensed and insured heating contractor based in Chelmsford, MA. Owner Michael Ciardi has 20+ years of hands-on experience working on residential and commercial heating systems throughout Massachusetts — including the steam boiler systems that heat thousands of older New England homes.

We’re a small, tight crew. We work clean, communicate clearly, and never sell you something you don’t need. Steam systems are complex and misunderstood by a lot of contractors — we know them well and we treat them with the care they require.

Some Of Our Services:

  • Steam Boiler Repair — Pressure issues, failed controls, leaking steam traps, waterlogged radiators, low water cutoff problems. We diagnose and repair all steam boiler faults accurately.
  • Steam Boiler Replacement — When your system has reached the end of its life, we handle full replacements to Massachusetts code. We’ll help you understand your options and make the right call for your home.
  • Steam Trap Service & Replacement — Failed steam traps are one of the most common and most overlooked causes of inefficiency and uneven heat in steam systems. We identify and replace them.
  • Low Water Cutoff Service — Annual flushing and testing of the low water cutoff is critical for steam boiler longevity. Neglecting this is one of the leading causes of premature steam boiler failure in New England.
  • Pressure Relief & Control Testing — We test and service all safety controls, pressure gauges, and relief valves to make sure your system is operating safely and within spec.
  • System Diagnostics & Tune-Ups — Pre-season inspection and adjustment of your steam system so it runs efficiently, evenly, and safely all winter long.

FAQ'S

Question: Why are some of my radiators not heating up?

Answer: Uneven heat in a steam system is almost always caused by failed steam traps, air vents that need replacing, or an imbalanced system. It’s one of the most common complaints we hear and it’s very fixable.

Answer: Banging or hammering in a steam system — called water hammer — is caused by water pooling in the pipes where steam is trying to flow. It’s usually a sign of improper pitch on the pipes, failed traps, or a system that needs balancing. It’s not something to ignore.

Answer: Every year at minimum. Steam systems require annual flushing of the low water cutoff, testing of all safety controls, and inspection of steam traps and vents. Skipping annual maintenance is the fastest way to shorten the life of a steam boiler.

Steam boilers are built to last — many run well past 25-30 years with proper maintenance. Age alone isn’t a reason to replace. We’ll give you an honest assessment of what your system actually needs rather than pushing you toward a replacement that may not be necessary.
